Opening the door to greater educational opportunities since 1963.

Thank you for your interest in the Guilford ABC program, now in its 44th year. In the 2015-16 school year, students attended a brand new high school designed to meet the changing needs of 21st century students and teachers. It is a state-of-the-art facility with a brand new Performing Arts Center which hosts our benefit concert with Mo Pleasure and GHS students.

The first step in applying to become an ABC student is to submit an application with the national office of A Better Chance. Click here for information on how to apply.  For Frequently Asked Questions, click here.

The Guilford ABC program is designed for highly talented and motivated young women from under-resourced educational communities who have the desire and potential to succeed in a rigorous high school setting and who plan to pursue higher education and to become a leader in life and their community.

As we review the applications we receive from the national A Better Chance office, we look for specific criteria, which includes demonstrated motivation, academic achievement (tests scores and grades), excellence as reflected in recommendations, demonstrated leadership skills, independence, readiness to leave home, and strengths and passions apart from academics.

If you are interested in having your application referred to the Guilford A Better Chance program,  please list this request in the section on school options when filling out your application.

Though the deadline for applications is May 1st, you will do well to begin the application process in the early fall of the previous year. Opportunities for placement become more limited later in the year. If a student, her family and school counselors are seriously interested in A Better Chance, the sooner the application process is started, the better the student’s chances are to be considered for the program.
